The "UX Of Hair" project delves into the intricate relationship between hair and individual identity. This exploration navigates the intersections of cultural expectations, personal choices, and societal norms. By designing a digital/physical experience, this project seeks to redefine the significance of hair beyond its biological functions. The objective is to create an innovative, interactive encounter that triggers conversations about the emotional, psychological, and social implications of hair.
Project Summary
Initiated with a body-storming exercise, our project aimed to dissect the multifaceted connections individuals share with their hair. The exercise revealed diverse perspectives shaped by culture, gender, and background. Through interviews and discussions, we uncovered a spectrum of emotions tied to hair, including insecurities surrounding growth, societal pressures, and traumatic experiences linked to stereotypes. This challenge sought to address the complexity of hair's cultural representation and provide a platform for meaningful conversations.
The Challenge/Problem
Our research illuminated hair's evolution from utilitarian functionality to a symbol of identity. Proposing a wearable device inspired by porcupine quill behaviour, we sought to recreate the hair's primal response for emotional stress or excitement. Illustrative sketches conveyed the wearable encounter's collaborative nature. This innovative concept aimed to facilitate discussions about emotional responses and societal expectations, bridging the gap between the physical and digital realms.
The Solution
The project's journey enabled us to question the intentions and implications of our wearable armour. This introspection led to a deeper understanding of its protective and symbolic significance. Drawing inspiration from animal mimicry, we reimagined hair's defensive aspect in a modern context. The design aimed to respond to loud or aggressive behaviour in social spaces, creating a disarming effect. Through these insights, our project highlighted the nuanced interplay between protection, intention, and perception.
In the UX Of Hair project, we embarked on a journey that explored the intricate tapestry of emotions, perceptions, and cultural nuances woven into the realm of hair. Through a meticulously crafted digital/physical experience, we aimed to initiate conversations about the mind-body connection, societal expectations, and the power of design to redefine personal narratives. This project not only unearthed the layers of meaning behind hair but also showcased the potential for design to challenge conventions and foster meaningful engagement.
